This is in regards to Obama’s willingness to embrace and surpass Bush’s policies on secret wiretaps.
Obama’s Justice Department has invoked the “state secrets” argument in recent court cases. These are cases in which detainees have sued private communications companies for allowing the Feds to illegally monitor communications within the medium. Obama's DOJ has claimed the right for the Feds to eavesdrop without repercussions.
Bush was constantly chided for stepping over the line to intercept communication between terrorists. I was never exactly sure how to feel about it. Of course, you want our government to take extraordinary measures to keep us safe; however, this can lead to a slippery slope of eavesdropping on ALL citizens by the executive branch. As for now, I am okay with our government secretly intercepting communications between suspected terrorists.
But, with Janet Napolitano changing “Terrorism” to “Man-Caused Disasters”, this may blur the line between what types of communications are suitable for “illegally” intercepting.
Apparently, Obama is now invoking the right to intercept ALL types of communication without being susceptible to lawsuits…..better make sure your inbox is cleaned out….I’ve seen the way some of you speak about our president!
