“A People who extend civil liberties only to preferred groups start down the path either to dictatorship of the right or the left.” – William Orwin Douglas
Last week, Obama overturned Bush’s gag on Federal money used for embryonic stem cell research and stifled more humane means of retrieving similar cells. I am not going to delve into the abortion debate as of yet. I think we all know that killing babies is pretty darn primitive, especially for such a “progressive” culture. The libs have been showering Obama with praise for “rekindling a partnership between true science and government”. This is vexing, considering the debate over embryonic stem cell research represents a moral dilemma, rather than an ignorant “red state” view towards actual science. Nazi doctors conducted brutal experiments in “the name of science”, so please don’t try to confuse society by blurring the argument.
There is an interesting parallel that can be drawn between those in support of Stem Cell Research and those in disagreement of torturing our enemies.
Embryonic stem cell research involves using the corpse of an aborted baby to harness cells used to re-grow nerve cell tissue for those in various states of muscle decay. The ends justify the means, right?
Now, consider the “civil liberties” that are defended by the ACLU and many on the left. The civil liberties of terrorists that we are forced to treat in a humane manor. No, aggressive interrogations cannot be conducted as a means to extract crucial information for “the greater good” of society. Their precious civil liberties are fought over tooth and nail...and they may make a valid point in certain cases. Or maybe the act of saving “life” does not appeal to their innermost senses.... Either way, the left holds themselves up as staunch defenders of civil liberties in this case.
But meanwhile, the act of abortion and the embryonic stem cell research that ensues are defended for their expediency and the greater good of society. I find this to be an interesting paradox. The fetus’ individual civil liberties have been trampled on by those who allow his or her mother to make the decision to end their life and use their bodies for science.
It is fascinating to watch an element of society obsessed with maintaining the civil liberties of those who vow to kill us, while completely ignoring the civil liberties of our unborn. I seriously doubt the baby was read his or her proverbial “Miranda Rights” before using their bodies for science. Yes, some are more equal than others...Makes you wonder whose side they’re on? Obviously, the feminist movement has more sway than our intelligence community.
Another quick question….what’s to stop research companies from paying the women to sell them the rights to their fetuses? This could lead to a dangerous incentive for women to make the decision to abort…..and maybe even get themselves pregnant for monetary gain.

Ha! Like this would be the first oppornunity a woman has taken to exploit the system for monetary gain (if I hear ONE more damn thing about that octuplets mom)....
This argument, while valid on both ends all comes down to "religion vs. science". Two topics nobody has all of the answers for -

Great point, although I don't believe it is "religeon vs. science"...you can be secular and still hold the belief that exploiting aborted babies in the name of science is creepy.
And, my main point was the complete double standard of the left when defending civil liberties of foreign terrorists while ignoring civil liberties of the unborn.
Similar double standard between those that say "though shalt not kill" when it comes to abortion, but are okay with the death penalty.
Despite what you hear, I stand on the fence: while I am against abortion, I am also realizing how many stupid people there are in this world and the numbers are just getting worse!
I mean, look at who won the majority in your last presidential election over there in the States!!!

I'm with you, though: the argument behind it all is a paradox and doesn't make sense, no matter the results
I've been told it worries the typical American Christian when they seen evidence of science starting to superceed the natural laws of nature (you think whatever God you believe in inteded for there to be a pill that would enable a woman to have EIGHT childred??) Cmon!

(...."Bill, change the damn tv - I've told you about those adult channels!!")
Oh how Obama's story has so quickly changed: he now claims it's ok for some of these "earmarks" to be on this stimulus bill as we need to move forward as Americans...(as per press conference this morning)
...I thought he was going to go through "ONE BY ONE" and get rid of the unneeded spending?
I also enjoy how he refers to this as "his first term" now when he speaks publicly. Ha! I'm not falling for that!
