Back to Basics

There has been much debate as of late regarding the future of the Republican party. If history is any indicator, there is a natural ebb and flow when it comes to politics and the Republicans’ time will come once again. That being said, there is certainly discussion within the party as to the direction it should head. It is a tricky balancing act of maintaining party principles while remaining relevant and electable.

Many within the party, as well as some “well-meaning” outsiders, suggest that the election of Obama was an indication that a Center-Right country had moved Center-Left. That is entirely untrue. Yes, the political winds were at Obama’s back, but let’s not forget the countless variables that allowed this man to slip through the cracks and fall onto our laps. An unpopular Republican President, an unpopular war, Republican corruption scandals, an adoring media, and an incompetent and weak Republican Presidential candidate are just a few of the factors leading up to Obama’s election. The fact that McCain even stayed in contention half the time shows that America was not as adoring of Obama as the national media would lead you to believe

The NYT “conservative” columnist, David Brooks, claims that the Republicans must become more “progressive” in order to remain competitive. Colin Powell says that Republicans must quit listening to people like Rush Limbaugh if they want a chance to stay relevant. Those are strong words for someone who endorsed a Socialist!

Another pundit suggested the Republicans were making a HUGE mistake by not supporting blanket amnesty for Illegal immigrants. Oh sure….that would be a great idea for them to support citizenship for 20 million illegal immigrants. I’m sure they will all be voting Republican after that…ha!

Republicans must go back to basics and promote an agenda of unobtrusive government. It was reassuring to watch the public’s reaction to Obama’s recent stimulus bill. Most were NOT in favor of the massive and wasteful spending laid out before them and the Republicans quickly became heroes for questioning our president. I read a column today titled, “Should the Republicans Become the Party of No?”….yes, they SHOULD! They will have absolutely nothing to gain by supporting Obama’s agenda, especially if Obama is seeking little or no Bi-Partisan input. And although, at this point, many are seeking comfort in government intervention, Obama is laying a down a budget for the largest expansion of Federal government since LBJ. Most Americans are timid of big government and for good reason.

You and I may value the basic principles of liberty and capitalism that many take for granted or have never given much thought to. Expanded government and higher taxes (and yes, there WILL be higher taxes under Obama) fly in the face of basic freedom. How is toiling at your job for 3 months to support an expanding government considered “freedom”…feels more like slavery to me!

The Republicans must stick to the principles of small government and economic logic, while finding a way to educate those as to the dangers of a leftist agenda. Why will Universal Healthcare be counterproductive? Why are gun rights essential to freedom? How are high taxes a detriment to our economy?

There are compelling arguments against leftist policies, however, I rarely hear them being made in a way most people will understand. With the government bribing its citizens, it will be tough to lure away voters by dangling a carrot of “principles”…..A child of a divorced couple will generally favor the parent that showers them with gifts, rather than the parent that wants to take them out on a sunny Sunday afternoon to throw a Frisbee. But, I have faith that most Americans are savvy enough to realize they are being stifled by government and its leaders…let’s just hope it’s not too late.

All of this speculation is intersting and warranted but as we all hold on for our dear country and livelihood let's see how this debacle all pans out....

....four years from now we can all vote otherwise - right? It's important for the other side (GOP) to continue to point out the shortcomings so the average, dumb*ss American can realize all that is and isn't come next election and (hopefully) vote accordingly, no?

At this point it is and will become ever increasingly appearant how our decrepid media has finally been realized for what it is - a crummy machine of lies, false hope and scare tactics....

(beware of all of the garbage out there, including right-wing elitist blogs!!)

Yeah, this is where I would have chosen for $175 million in bailout money to go:

Gosh forbid we lose the success of downward-trodden sports league while people need jobs and starve....

...maybe if people could actually AFFORD an NBA ticket today (avg of over $70 a piece now)....

I think the problem with the "stimulus" is that the ROI is not very high. You dish out $1 in spending and create $1 worth of work. Financing new jobs by creating debt, rather than slashing taxes and encouraging hiring that way. And don't ever let them tell you cutting taxes is "spending" or should be considered a "cost".
